The plastic cap, or closure may be used for the protection of tubes, pipes, fittings, shafts, nuts, bolts and screws. A plastic cap with a taper can be used to provide a tight or secure fit to it's receiving port. Plastic caps are commonly used as plugs by fitting it with the narrowest end of it's taper towards the intended port. Caps may be threaded (female thread), tapered, and/or anti-roll. A plastic cap commonly has a female thread, inversely plugs will have a male thread.

Caps may have a flange. The flange provides a solution for easy removal of the plastic cap, prevents over insertion if used as a plug, whilst providing additional protection of the bearing surface.

Another variation of the standard plastic cap is the quick fit / quick release style component. The component has a tear-tab for easy removal or release, the tab once pulled tears a section of the cap away making removal simple and easy. Alternative terms
