Moss Binder Screws used for canoe assembly in charity event

For three days in August, the only thing between Moss product manager Tim Watson and the water of the Thames was a sheet of corrugated plastic and some Moss Binder Screws.

It was all part of a project called Canoe The Thames, which this year enabled 15 participants from the Brighton area to raise money for their favourite charity by paddling a collapsible plastic canoe the length of the Thames. The boats are made entirely from corrugated polypropolene, folded into shape “origami” style, and held together with Moss Binder Screws. Moss Plastic Parts donated the fasteners for the construction of all participating crafts. These canoes have also been on trips down the River Usk in Wales, through the backwater lakes of southern India and out into the Arabian Sea.

Tim began his canoe trip in Lechlade (the first navigable point on the Thames), in Wiltshire – and paddled 60 miles in three days down to Benson, northwest of London. Tim notes that “This was a great opportunity for me to meet new people, see new things, enjoy an athletic challenge, and raise money for a worthy charity.” Supporters enabled Tim to donate a total of £535 to Oxfam, an international relief organisation based in Oxford. Looking back on the experience Tim comments, “I grew to appreciate my canoe, but it was a little bit like canoeing in a cereal box; it was hard work on the long stretches.”

Binder Screws, or Binding Screws are part of the Fasteners and Fixings range in the Moss product offering. While the components proved to be quite effective for assembling corrugated plastic boats for the “Canoe The Thames” project, Binder Screws are more often used for for restaurant menus, albums, corporate brochures, swatches and hotel guides. Binder Screws will be featured in the new Moss Product Catalogue to be launched in January 2010, and in Moss’ expanded Point of Sale catalogue which will be released in April.
